1. Unlike its scaled-back chamber shows, the Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra's spring concert will feature full complement of 100 musicians performing the kind of rich, orchestral music associated with many Chinese cinematic imports.

2. An outgrowth of music director Gordon Lee's Eastern Music Center, the orchestra features young performers born or raised in the United States.

3. It gives Chinese-American youngsters the chance to explore their cultural heritage by learning to play such Chinese instruments as the pipa, the pear-shaped relative of the lute, and er-hu, a two-stringed violin.
